Chapter 51: Mumu, do not be afraid; Grandma will not let anything happen to you.
Gu Mingyu and Gu Mingtang also had their cangues and iron chains removed, and then each retrieved their weapons from the bailiffs. The three brothers and their elderly father each guarded one of the four directions, though they could not fight too many, as the others were a burden to them.
"Remove mine as well," Gu Yuru said in a deep voice. "Father, count me in."
"And us," Li Yunchao and his younger brothers said in unison.
Young Gu Yu stood shoulder to shoulder with his older cousins, looking fierce and fearless in the face of the wolf pack.
"And ours, ours too," shouted Li Sheng. Wearing those cangues would make it hard to run later.
"What are you all rushing for? You can't even fight!" the bailiff roared.
Zhang Xiang shouted, "Unchain Li Yuan first. He can fight."
Li Yuan said nothing, but Old Madam Li was reluctant. "My son has injuries on his body."
"If he can't, will you go up instead?" the bailiff asked scornfully.
Even the children of the Gu family had stepped up, whereas the Li family was so cowardly and afraid to die; the contrast between them was stark.
Old Madam Li tugged at Li Yuan's arm. "Third son, don't rush forward. Let them go up; they can fight."
Perhaps having just been mocked, Li Yuan still cared about his pride and deliberately raised his voice. "Mother, I must protect my wife and child."
Gu Yuru was currently braced for battle and had no time for his nonsense.
Li Mumu hurriedly snapped off a few branches and sharpened their tips. She did not need many; she only needed to strike at the crucial moment while remaining unnoticed.
She had gas guns and other weapons in her spatial dimension, which were more than enough to deal with this wolf pack.
Being wounded by a wolf could still heal, but being bitten by a zombie would turn one into a zombie. Therefore, these wolves were a piece of cake to her.
The members of the Li family were unchained one by one, but neither of the two brothers, Li Sheng and Li Ye, had any intention of stepping forward. They both planned to turn and run as soon as they realized they couldn't win.
Running away first was paramount; they must by no means end up in the bellies of wolves.
"Brother Yuan, you must be careful," Lin Siyan said.
Li Yuan glanced at her, then looked at the resolute woman holding a saber with heroic bearing, and once again strode toward her. "Yuru, I will fight shoulder to shoulder with you."
Li Mumu's wooden arrows were almost finished. She possessed more than enough strength, making her attacks quite lethal.
Gu Yuru frowned. "I don't need your protection. Go protect the person you ought to protect."
"You are the person I ought to protect," Li Yuan said.
Listening to this, Li Mumu felt like vomiting. No wonder her naive mother had been coaxed into marrying him back then; these sweet nothings rolled off his tongue so easily that ordinary people truly could not resist them.
"Everyone get ready, they are coming," Gu Jian said in a deep voice. "Mingyu, Ming棠, Mingjing, the three of you are responsible for breaking through the gap. Yuru, take the children and guard the rest."
"Father, what about me?" Li Yuan asked.
Old Master Gu glanced at him. Given the critical situation, he didn't bother correcting his address. "After the gap is opened, lead the people to retreat to higher ground first. Those without sabers should use torches for self-defense; that can fend them off temporarily."
"Father, I am staying with Yuru."
Old Master Gu felt an urge to curse. What time is it now? The bigger picture comes first!
If he wanted to win back his wife and child, what was he doing earlier?
There was a reason he looked down on this son-in-law.
After the wolf king howled once more, the wolf pack launched its attack. A few wolves leaped forward first, and the three Gu brothers stepped up to parry their momentum.
In fact, wolf packs also relied heavily on tactics.
The Li family members were already crying in fright. Although Old Madam Gu was anxious in her heart, she guarded her two daughters-in-law. "Let's not panic, lest we distract them. Mumu... where is Mumu?"
Old Madam Gu discovered that her little granddaughter was missing.
"Over there!" Zhang Yi pointed at a small mound not far away.
"Mumu, come over here quickly," Song Qiang shouted anxiously. "It's dangerous there."
Li Mumu did not want to go over. That area was crowded and heavily guarded, making it difficult for her to move freely. She shook the bow and arrow in her hand. "I want to help too."
Old Madam Gu was worried sick. "Good child, it's dangerous there. Come to grandmother's side quickly."
Disregarding the danger, Old Madam Gu started forward to embrace her.
Li Mumu sighed. "Grandmother, don't come over."
Yet even as she spoke, a ferocious wolf had already set its sights on this pair of grandmother and grandchild, and with acute agility, it lunged toward them.
There were many wolves, and the Gu family members were each fighting in trepidation. Even Gu Yuru had to deal with two wolves all by herself, and these wolves had turned vicious, determined not to stop until they achieved their goal.
"Mother!"
"Bikun!"
"Mumu~"
Old Madam Gu acted as if she hadn't heard. "Mumu, don't be afraid, grandmother is coming."
Even if she died, she could not let her little granddaughter come to harm.
"Bikun! Watch out!" Old Master Gu shouted at the top of his lungs.
Seeing the wolf pounce toward her, Old Madam Gu closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and prepared to use her own body to shield her little granddaughter.
She could already feel the stray hairs by her ear fluttering from the draft of the pouncing wolf. She kept her eyes shut, waiting for the moment to arrive.
However, the anticipated pain did not come. It was replaced by a heavy stench of blood and a warm liquid splashing across her face. "Mumu, grandmother is here."
Li Mumu put away her bow and arrow, helped her up, pointed at the starved wolf lying dead beside her, and smiled cheerfully, "Grandmother, Mumu killed it."
"Killed it?" Old Madam Gu stared in astonishment at the calm and composed little girl before her. "So this isn't grandmother's blood?"
"Of course not," Li Mumu said.
At this moment, Song Qiang's voice rang out as well. "Mumu knows how to shoot arrows?"
Li Mumu smiled and nodded. "I do, Mother taught me."
Gu Yuru had indeed taught the original owner, but the original owner had never learned. However, Li Mumu knew how, so everything fell naturally into place.
Li Mumu escorted her grandmother, who had disregarded her own safety to protect her, to a safe place, and then shook the bow and arrow in her hand. "Mumu can protect grandmother too."
Old Madam Gu shed tears of gratitude for surviving the ordeal, and rejoiced that her little granddaughter was safe and sound.
"Now, Mumu is going to protect Mother, Grandfather, and the uncles."
"And me!" Gu Yu said.
Li Mumu nodded. "Cousin, I need arrows."
"No problem." Gu Yu picked up a vegetable knife and chopped the tree branches on the ground into the shapes of arrows. "Mumu, do I get half the credit for the wolves you kill?"
Song Qiang poked him on the forehead. "Have you learned how to steal the credit now?"
Many of the bailiffs had lost their swords and could only cower in the back. Liu Zi, however, had rushed to the front holding a torch, but his martial arts skills were lacking. Although the wolves were initially afraid of the torch, seeing their companions die miserably turned their eyes red, and they became viciously determined to tear him apart.
Liu Zi was knocked to the ground and let out a terrified scream. Just as the starved wolf opened its bloodthirsty jaws, intent on biting through his neck, a sharp arrow pierced through the wolf's belly. With such tremendous force, the wolf was carried off to the side and pinned directly to the ground.
Frightened out of his wits, Liu Zi scrambled up, looked around everywhere, and saw the little girl waving her makeshift bow and arrow at him with a smile.
