Sun Yaqin went to Chen Laosi’s house again. Chen Laosi was the village’s most avid hunter, so his home surely had plenty of game.

“Uncle! Aunt!”

“Yaqin, girl, you’re back! Come in quickly. When did you get back?” Chen Laosi’s wife warmly pulled her inside.

“Aunt, do you have any wild game?”

“Yes, tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll ask your uncle to get some for you.”

Sun Yaqin’s eyes narrowed into slits as she smiled mischievously at Chen Laosi’s wife. “Aunt, I’m not eating it; I want to sell wild game.”

“Sell wild game?” Chen Laosi’s wife looked surprised.

She quickly glanced toward the door to see if anyone was outside, then pulled Sun Yaqin further into the room and whispered, “Yaqin, be careful not to talk about this outside. Haven’t you heard about Old Wu Er next door? He got caught for profiteering. If you want to eat it yourself, I’ll ask your uncle to find some, but selling it is absolutely out of the question.”

Sun Yaqin knew that most people in Shanglin Village were simple and cautious. No matter how much she explained, they might never understand.

“Aunt, the person I’m dealing with has a license and can sell legally. If you’re really worried, just give me any wild game you don’t eat, and when I sell it and make some money, I’ll exchange it for things for you.”

“Yaqin, it’s not that I don’t want to help, it’s just that I’m worried about you. I can’t agree to this. I have to ask your parents first. If they agree, I’ll give you all the wild game we have. We can’t finish it ourselves, and your uncle loves hunting in the mountains; otherwise, it would all rot by spring.”

Sun Yaqin nodded. “Thank you, Aunt.”

During her days in Shanglin Village, she visited several uncles and aunts close to her family. Without exception, due to the caution inspired by Old Wu Er’s case, no one was willing to give her any wild game from their hunts.

In the end, only Chen Laosi’s family gave her over a hundred pounds of wild game, refusing to take a single cent and insisting it was a gift.

Because of his sister’s troubles, Sun Liancheng had taken leave from work. Unlike other units, his was quietest at the end of the year.

With only five days remaining until Little New Year, Sun Yaqin had no choice but to go hunting herself in the mountains to earn extra money.

Don’t underestimate the purchasing power of this era—people’s lives were improving, full of vigor and hope. During the New Year, every family was willing to spend, especially on food.

“Big brother, let’s go hunting in the mountains.”

“Sun Yaqin, have you lost your mind? Don’t you remember last time you sneaked out with Dad’s hunting rifle and got beaten so badly you couldn’t get out of bed for three days?”

Sun Yaqin shot her brother a sideways glance. “Big brother, that was ages ago. Dad won’t hit me now.”

“No way. Hunting rifles are dangerous, and you don’t use them often enough. If you really want to go, I’ll take you to flush out some wild chickens.”

Sun Yaqin was reluctant. “Wild chickens are too small; they’re barely worth the effort. If only I could hunt a wild boar...”

She fantasized about bagging a wild boar to make a decent profit.

As she was daydreaming, her brother jabbed her hard in the head. “Come on, I saw Dad just cleaned his rifles this morning.”

Sun Yaqin nodded eagerly.

“Mom, Yaqin and I are going out. We won’t be back for lunch.”

“Come back early tonight!”

“Got it, Mom!”

Seeing Yang Guilan didn’t follow them out, the siblings slipped quietly into Yang Junde’s small storage shed, which held various tools and three hunting rifles.

“I’ll take the rifle; you flush out the wild chickens. Don’t touch this gun, or I won’t go with you.”

Though itching to hold the rifle herself, Sun Yaqin knew her brother wouldn’t agree, so she accepted his terms and took some other tools.

Dressed in the leather jackets and hats from the shed, the two headed into the mountains.

Climbing the hills was easy for these siblings who had grown up in the forest area, and they knew exactly where the wild chickens nested in winter.

“See those footprints? That’s a wild chicken’s. Scatter some corn kernels there, then we’ll trap it.”

Sun Yaqin followed her brother’s instructions, scattering corn kernels in the area, then waited quietly. With everyone preparing for the New Year, few people were hunting, and the silence had lulled the game into a false sense of security.

A wild chicken strutted out proudly, its feathers shimmering in vibrant colors. The siblings held their breath, waiting for it to step into their trap.

Just as they were about to pull the rope, several people behind them shouted in fluent Russian, ordering them to drop their guns and raise their hands without moving.

Sun Liancheng, fluent in Russian, immediately understood. His Adam’s apple bobbed nervously.

Sun Yaqin tried to turn around, but her brother stopped her, crouching down to set his rifle on the ground. He whispered, “Don’t move! Don’t look back! Raise your hands. Did we accidentally cross the border?”

“Big brother, impossible. I could find the Shanglin Village border blindfolded. If anyone crossed, it must be them. We absolutely can’t let them.”

The people behind seemed to hear their murmurs and quickly reported. “Commander, these don’t seem to be the ones we’re after. They look Chinese.”

The siblings turned around almost simultaneously. The others, assuming they still held rifles, immediately drew pistols and aimed at them. Sun Yaqin lost her footing and tumbled down the steep hillside.

“Ah!” Sun Yaqin cried out.

Quick as a flash, Sun Liancheng pushed his sister away and fell toward the bottom himself. Qin Xiangdong, leading the mission, reacted instantly, grabbing Sun Liancheng, and several soldiers helped haul them back up.

Sun Yaqin’s heart pounded wildly. Only after her brother was safe did she look at the people before them.

“Commander Qin, what are you doing here?”

Qin Xiangdong, watching how Sun Liancheng risked his life to save his sister, felt conflicted. “ComradeI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
