Chapter 125: Comrade Police Officer

The Days of Becoming Wukong’s Junior Brother
If someone asked which places in a city were busiest in the morning, I imagine that, apart from the public toilets scattered through the streets and alleys, it would have to be the newspaper offices. And within a newspaper office, the busiest departments were the daily-paper distribution section and the evening-paper news department.
The mornings at the Huangjiang Evening News were no exception. Reporters hurried in and out while editors hunched over their computers, working with their heads down. Before eleven, they had to fit every piece of content onto that day’s evening paper like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Competition was fierce. Although it was called an evening paper, copies had to be delivered to kiosks and newsstands by two or three in the afternoon, and the news had to be as fresh and sensational as possible if they wanted anyone to pay attention.
Yang Huiru, editor in chief of the news department, had long grown accustomed to such frantic mornings. Without realizing it, she had already spent fifteen years in the evening news department. She had never counted how many mornings she had passed with her head bent over the desk, carefully reviewing the various reports hurriedly gathered by her capable reporters.
“Are you looking for Chief Editor Yang? She’s over there.”
A young junior reporter brought a man and a woman before Yang Huiru.
Yang Huiru was furious inside. Couldn’t they see how busy she was? Where did she have the time to receive visitors? But she could not show it on her face. She merely glared fiercely at the young man.
The young reporter said aggrievedly, “They specifically asked to see Chief Editor Yang. They said they had something important and begged us to help them.”
“Oh? Then come with me to the next room.”
Yang Huiru’s sensitivity to news was like a fly’s ability to smell a pile of manure from several miles away. Seeing the pitiful expressions of the two people before her, she knew at once that a story worth sensationalizing had come right to her door.
Ever since becoming editor in chief, she had helped disadvantaged people, dared to speak the truth, and dared to offend powerful figures. She had quickly won widespread recognition in Huangjiang. Sometimes, people even joked that the city’s police, procuratorate, and courts could all close their doors—as long as they had Yang Huiru, she could stand up for justice and expose evil on behalf of the people.
Watching Yang Huiru walk away with the two visitors, the young reporter could not help swallowing. She really was the number-one beauty of the Huangjiang Evening News. Everyone knew that her daughter was already in her final year of high school, yet there was no sign of her age. Her beautiful face was lightly made up, with willow-leaf brows and almond-shaped eyes. Forget wrinkles—even a young girl’s face was not as smooth and full as hers. Her figure remained plump and proudly voluptuous, and her impressive breasts were enough to set any man’s blood racing.
Her clothes were just as youthful and daring as those of a young girl. A black bra was tightly outlined beneath a short, sheer T-shirt, while her extremely low-waisted jeans revealed not only her lower belly and navel for every man to admire free of charge, but also a clear glimpse of pink panties. The sight left them both worried and expectant, wondering when the jeans might slide down.
After listening to the rural-accented couple explain what had happened, Yang Huiru looked at the man’s helpless eyes and the woman’s tear-streaked face. Furious, she slapped the table and rose to her feet.
“There are actually children in this world who behave like that? What shameless brats! Don’t worry. I’ll report this as quickly as possible. The unfilial daughter is named Zhang Xiaoli? And the rich young man is Liu Yunfei? They both attend Huangjiang Experimental High School? All right, I’ve written it down. We’ll keep in touch by phone.”
Liu Yunfei had been rather depressed these past few days. Only he and Zhang Xiaoli were left at home, but Zhang Xiaoli seemed to have been poisoned by Teacher Gao Yueqiu’s ideas. She stubbornly believed that once they did that, she would no longer be pure and the sweetness of first love would disappear. Every time they became intimate, she clung desperately to her trousers. He could see but not touch.
He had no idea that someone had already gone to the newspaper office to expose him. Today, as soon as he and Zhang Xiaoli arrived at school, he received a call from Director Zhu, who said that something had come up and asked him to get to the station as soon as possible.
Liu Yunfei did not even need to ask for leave anymore. Teacher Zhu simply did not bother with him. He left Zhang Xiaoli behind and drove back.
“Pull over! Pull over!”
Two female traffic officers stopped the Porsche again.
“Oh, come on, ladies! Isn’t stopping me once every morning enough? You can’t pull me over every single time I pass by.”
Liu Yunfei wore a pained expression. Ever since he had teased the two young women the last time, they stopped him every morning, whether there was traffic or not.
The petite policewoman fought hard to suppress her laughter. “A6688, please show me your driver’s license and vehicle registration.”
“How many times have you looked at them already? Do you have some kind of addiction? Should I also show you my identity card, marriage certificate, and property deed?”
“If you take them out, I’ll look at them.”
The petite policewoman extended a small hand covered in snow-white gloves. As Liu Yunfei handed over his documents, he secretly caught her index finger between two of his own fingers. She tried to pull free but could not, and she was afraid her senior partner would notice, so she squeezed her eyes fiercely at Liu Yunfei.

“Finished? Can I leave now?”
Liu Yunfei was reluctant to let the petite policewoman go. Her skin looked slightly darkened by the sun, but the longer he looked at her, the more pleasing and adorable she seemed.
With her finger caught between his, the petite policewoman stopped looking at the documents and could only release the thumb holding them. Liu Yunfei slipped the documents back into his pocket and was about to leave when the policewoman suddenly noticed something. She became as excited as if she had won the lottery.
“A6688, you weren’t wearing your seat belt! You’re being fined!”
Liu Yunfei had just unfastened his seat belt when he received Director Zhu’s call, and he had forgotten to buckle it again. He could only smile.
“Fine me, then. I guarantee I’ll wear a safety condom next time.”
The petite policewoman was extremely innocent. How could she be as shameless as Liu Yunfei? Not only did she fail to catch the double meaning in his words, she even repeated it incorrectly along with him.
“A6688. Fine: two hundred. Violation: failure to wear a safety condom while driving.”
Liu Yunfei accepted the ticket and studied the signature carefully. He had been trying to find out her name for a long time, but she had never told him, no matter how much he asked.
Who would have thought the young woman had considered that as well? The signature consisted only of her badge number. Watching the victorious smile on the petite policewoman’s face, Liu Yunfei pulled a face.
“Girl, sooner or later I’ll find out what your name is.”
As the license plate A6688 grew smaller and blurrier, the young policewoman felt an inexplicable delight in her heart. Ever since she had seen his private parts that day and exchanged a few words with him, she had grown increasingly fond of trading remarks with him. They were always shameless remarks, but for some inexplicable reason, she liked the feeling. Whenever she saw the Porsche bearing the plate A6688 approaching, a thrill rose within her. Yet when she saw Liu Yunfei’s roguish expression, she also felt an urge to pinch him.
“What are you looking at? He’s already gone. Have you taken a fancy to that boy?”
The fuller-figured policewoman’s tone was clearly displeased, with even a hint of jealousy.
“Didn’t we agree? Whoever among us first finds a man she can rely on will end our relationship.”
If Liu Yunfei had been there, he would certainly have cried out, “What? You two are lovers?”
“But that boy doesn’t look like someone anyone could rely on.”
The fuller policewoman still clearly held a grudge against Liu Yunfei. Muttering to herself, she walked away.
Seeing Director Zhu Zhicheng sitting upright in the station chief’s office, Liu Yunfei thought to himself that the petite policewoman was merely sunburned. If she took off her clothes, there would surely be plenty of pale skin underneath. But Director Zhu was naturally dark—so dark that if he fell into a coal pile, no one would be able to find him. If a man from Africa came along, he would certainly have found a long-lost relative.
“First, I’ll tell you some good news. Zhou Jinbao has regained consciousness. He hasn’t been discharged yet, but he’s out of danger,” Zhu Zhicheng said first.
“What kind of good news is that? I was hoping he’d die. The fewer scumbags like him in the world, the better.”
Liu Yunfei spoke sourly. “You could have told me that over the phone. Why make me come all this way?”
“You’re not even that old, yet you’re already this lazy? You call this all the way? Since you’re here, let me give you some bad news as well. The Zhou family has sued you. You’ll be receiving a court summons soon.”
“I’m not afraid of being sued. Let him jump around all he likes. But I hear there’s still some good news hidden in your words. Go on, tell me. Don’t hold it in until something happens to you. Otherwise, tomorrow’s evening paper might run a special column: ‘Promising Young Police Officer Dies Before His Time—Apparently Suffocated by Urine.’ Ha-ha!”
Zhu Zhicheng actually laughed. “You never have anything good to say. Since you’re so concerned about my health, I’ll tell you the good news.”

Liu Yunfei quickly dragged a chair over and pressed it against Zhu Zhicheng’s large desk.
“Doesn’t your station know how to save the country money? Why do you need such a huge desk?”
Zhu Zhicheng ignored him.
“The first piece of good news is that the Four Seas Society seems to have stopped interfering in the Zhou family’s affair.”
“Oh? How do you know?”
Liu Yunfei thought that teaching Jiang Tao a lesson had apparently been worthwhile.
“Are you stupid? If the Four Seas Society had gotten involved, they would already have come looking for trouble. Would the Zhou family still need to hire a lawyer to sue you?”
Zhu Zhicheng glanced sideways at Liu Yunfei.
“That makes sense. But in a case like this, shouldn’t the procuratorate be the one to bring the charges?”
“That’s the second piece of good news. The procuratorate isn’t taking his case either. I hear he’s been running back and forth for the past few days. When he went to the procuratorate, they sent him straight over to us to retrieve the file. Then they immediately told him they wouldn’t accept the case. That skinflint Zhou was furious and had no choice but to sue you himself. But I hear the Zhou family has hired a nationally renowned lawyer this time—someone capable of overturning even a murder conviction. You’d better be careful.”
“Let him come. If he can hire a lawyer, can’t I? I could even afford to hire a Queen’s Counsel from Britain.”
Liu Yunfei spoke disdainfully.
“I know you have money, but you’d better watch what you say from now on. Don’t keep calling yourself ‘your father’ every other sentence. You’re one of our police officers now.”
Zhu Zhicheng took a small booklet and a large box from his drawer and pushed them in front of Liu Yunfei.
“Oh? It’s ready?”
The booklet was embossed in gold with the words “Police Officer’s Certificate.” When Liu Yunfei opened it, he saw his own photograph.
“Second-class police inspector? Isn’t that a little too low?”
“You really are a toad trying to rival the heavens with your boastfulness. Two stripes and two stars—that’s already very good for someone who just joined.”
“Oh? You even prepared a uniform for me. You really thought of everything. But I’m a little suspicious. Everyone says that becoming a police officer requires approval from someone at the director’s level. I’m still a high-school student, so how did you get this done so quickly? Aren’t you, as a station chief, a little too powerful?”
Liu Yunfei put on the cap and ran to the full-length mirror by the door. He looked quite the part. He was handsome, after all; everything looked good on him. He wondered how many policewomen would be conquered by him. Alas, what a burden his beauty was.
“Don’t run off just yet. Come to our station the day after tomorrow and begin your first lesson. Be here first thing in the morning.”
