Chapter 146: Convergence of the Red Team
After listening to Heiji Hattori’s account, Heizo Hattori basically believed everything his son had said.
"You don't need to investigate cases anymore. Go to Tokyo, and I will make arrangements for someone to contact you," Heizo Hattori said after a moment of deep thought.
Arrrange someone? Heiji Hattori understood immediately. He was probably going to meet an undercover agent from the Black Organization very soon. However, why was his father, the Chief Superintendent of the Osaka Prefectural Police, meddling with an undercover operative in Tokyo?
Curiosity aside, Heiji knew the rules and chose not to ask further questions.
A few days later, with remote assistance from Yusaku Kudo, Conan and Heiji cleared out all the pending cases on their desks that could be solved through case files, and then headed side by side toward Tokyo.
Meanwhile, back at Professor Agasa’s house, Fina was yawning, her face looking quite exhausted. She had just carved the energy extraction array into Haibara Ai’s body and conveniently cast a spatial expansion magic on the basement; otherwise, it wouldn't have been able to hold so many people.
But it was all set now. The energy storage device on the shuttlecraft had been idle for so long that it was finally starting to operate, and the Black Organization was nearing its end.
Ding-dong. The doorbell rang.
Wearing his slippers, Professor Agasa shuffled over to the monitor. Standing outside the courtyard gate was a rather handsome police officer in a full uniform, holding a few folders in his hand.
"Hello, is there something I can help you with?" Professor Agasa opened the door, walked out into the yard, and asked.
"Hello, Chief Superintendent Hattori sent me. I am Rei Furuya. May I come in?" Rei Furuya asked very politely.
"Ah, yes, please do."
Professor Agasa hurried to open the gate fully.
As Rei Furuya walked in, he continuously observed the situation in the courtyard—perhaps a result of his occupational hazard.
In truth, he still hadn't figured out the situation. Why would the Chief Superintendent in Osaka go through such a roundabout way to have him come and find a little boy named Conan Edogawa?
Finding the kid was one thing, but he was also instructed to obey the orders of Conan Edogawa and Heiji Hattori for the time being. This matter was like absurdity opening the door for absurdity—it was absurd to the extreme.
Anyway, he was just planning to drop by this time and simply go through the motions. Despite Rei Furuya's relatively modest official rank within the Public Security Bureau, that was only because he was currently working undercover. Once his undercover mission concluded, he would easily skip several ranks at once.
While the Chief Superintendent of Osaka had the authority to issue orders to him, he saw no absolute obligation to obey them blindly.
As soon as Rei Furuya entered the house, Fina's communicator instantly received a message from Haibara Ai in the basement: her radar system had activated once again.
Ever since realizing that her radar was a supernatural ability, Haibara had recently begun consciously training her perceptual faculty—detecting anomalies early meant resolving them early.
Fina looked up at Rei Furuya. "Officer, are you here to check passports?"
"No, I am here to..."
Before Rei Furuya could finish his sentence, the front door, which had just been closed, was pulled open again.
"Shinichi, you're back," Professor Agasa greeted warmly. As was often the case, he still hadn't managed to remember that the current Kudo Shinichi had to be called Conan.
"Professor!" Conan gave a pointed look to remind him.
"Oh, oh, Conan, you're back," Professor Agasa corrected himself immediately. Yet this correction proved worse than no correction at all, making it even more conspicuous.
Rei Furuya gave Conan a deep, scrutinizing look. Shinichi? Kudo Shinichi? This was getting interesting.
"Oh, hello. You must be the police officer my father mentioned," Heiji stepped up to Rei Furuya and extended his hand. "I'm Heiji Hattori, an intern patrol officer."
That's right, Heizo Hattori had casually secured a patrol officer status for his underage son who was still in high school. Although it was the lowest possible rank, it officially inducted him into the police system.
"Hello, I'm Rei Furuya," Rei Furuya replied neither servilely nor overbearingly, paying no mind to the fact that Heiji was the son of a high-ranking official.
At that moment, Fina stood up from her seat. "Heiji Hattori, is this the person your father chose?"
"Yes," Heiji nodded and replied.
"Alright then. Since everyone is here, follow me." Fina waved her hand and took the lead, walking toward the basement.
Although Rei Furuya didn't understand what was going on, he didn't believe Heizo Hattori would be a member of the Organization, so he followed along, filled with lingering doubts.
When Rei Furuya followed Conan, Heiji, and Fina into the basement, he was utterly dumbfounded.
This place was enormous—it was practically larger than the house above ground. This was far from normal.
As Fina walked in once again, everyone else in the basement instantly fixed their gazes on Rei Furuya trailing behind her.
Rei Furuya took two steps forward and froze in his tracks.
Shuichi Akai! Kir!
Add himself to the mix, and they could practically hold a full-scale Organization meeting. Wait, hadn't Shuichi Akai betrayed them? This gathering didn't look right at all!
Indeed, the reason Haibara Ai was able to instantly sense Rei Furuya was not only due to her targeted training lately, but also because she was suddenly coming into contact with too many members of the Black Organization all at once.
Rei Furuya subconsciously placed his hand on the gun hidden inside his jacket and took cautious steps forward. His mind was currently in a complete blur.
"Take your seats. There are quite a few people here, so let's skip the self-introductions. Just look at the nameplates in front of you. The meeting will begin in one minute," Vernon said, raising his head. Most of the people here had been brought together by him through various methods, contacting different nations across this planet.
Pisco—no, Renya Karasuma—had stored his energy within building materials, leaving them with no choice but to rely on other nations of the world; operating entirely on his own would have been far too inefficient.
Before Rei Furuya could settle properly into his seat, Fina casually placed a plaque in front of him: Bourbon / Rei Furuya, Japanese Public Security.
Sweat beading slightly on his forehead, Rei Furuya glanced at the nameplates of the others.
Sherry / Shiho Miyano / Ai Haibara; Rye / Shuichi Akai / FBI; Kir / Hondo Hidemi / CIA; Fina / Ouroboros; Vernon / Ouroboros; Conan / Shinichi Kudo; Heiji Hattori / Japanese Police.
The Organization didn't have many codename-bearing members to begin with; factoring in the defectors, half of the middle-tier backbone personnel had been rounded up in one fell swoop right here.
You're all undercover agents?! Rei Furuya stared at the other codenamed individuals.
Shuichi Akai pulled the brim of his hat down slightly; he had nothing to say. Had he known the wine factory was entirely filled with fake booze, and that the few genuine bottles were mostly cheap trash, he wouldn't have bothered risking his life back then.
Hondo Hidemi's mood wasn't great either; her father had died a completely unjust death.
Haibara Ai merely sighed, lowering her gaze to study her materials. With so many undercover agents, yet that organization had managed to exist for so long—one could only wonder what the leaders commanding these people were actually thinking.
"Alright, you're all acquainted now. There was supposed to be one more person, but she can't make it right now, so I'll speak on her behalf. Her codename is Vermouth, and her real name is Chris Vineyard," Vernon continued.
"Vermouth is one too?!" Rei Furuya couldn't help blurting out. Wasn't Vermouth rumored to be the boss's favored daughter? Even the beloved daughter had turned traitor?!
Vernon nodded. During that glimpse across the timeline, he had caught sight of this woman, and reaching out to her this time had been a convenient afterthought.
Who would have thought that upon confirming the authenticity of the situation, Vermouth agreed to defect without a second thought and spilled everything completely clean? Judging by her attitude, she seemed desperately eager for the Black Organization to perish immediately. Who knows what kind of deep grudge she held against those people.
Rei Furuya slowly released his grip on his gun. This couldn't possibly be a trap; if the Black Organization possessed this kind of capability, they would rule the entire Earth.
