Luo Xing pressed her lips together. “Sorry, I don’t add people I’m not familiar with.”

Ke Yu smiled. “It’s fine, we’ll get familiar if we talk more.”

Luo Xing lowered her head and sighed. “Do you like me?”

Her tone was helpless.

Xu Yan’s face showed surprise, clearly not expecting Luo Xing to be so direct.

Ke Yu nodded. “Yeah, I do.”

“Then you should give up now. Don’t waste your time on me,” Luo Xing said.

Just then, Shen Que and Qi Changbai returned.

Shen Que saw someone sitting in his seat, frowned, and looked at Luo Xing.

They were close enough that a glance was enough to understand what the other wanted to ask. Luo Xing shook her head—she didn’t know this person.

“Hello, this is my seat,” Shen Que said.

Ke Yu acted friendly. “Hey, Shen Que! I know you, you’re Yao Xiangming’s friend. That means we’re sort of friends too, right?”

Luo Xing was getting annoyed. She stood up. “We’re about to eat. Please go back to your seat and don’t disturb us.”

Shen Que glanced at Luo Xing, surprised she was dealing with this herself.

“If you add me, I’ll go,” Ke Yu persisted, still holding his phone.

Luo Xing was starting to get angry. “I said no.”

Qi Changbai had figured out what was going on. He looked over. “Dude, are you looking for a fight? She already said no, and there are three guys here—do you think we’re just decoration?”

Xu Yan chuckled. “Yeah, we’re not just here for show.”

Ke Yu lost his nerve, picked up his bowl and chopsticks, and left, returning to his seat.

Luo Xing sat down. “Let’s eat.”

Xu Yan kept watching Ke Yu.

The food arrived, and everyone ate in silence. No one noticed Xu Yan snapping a photo of Ke Yu.

...

The restaurant was quiet.

Gu Shiyan listened to Sun Shiqi talking across the table, nodding along distractedly.

His phone vibrated. He unlocked it and glanced at the screen.

It was a photo from Xu Yan.

[Shiyan, this guy is awful. He keeps trying to add Luo Xing even though she said no. Isn’t that too much? Don’t you think so?]

It was basically just venting.

Gu Shiyan looked at the photo. He didn’t recognize the person.

“What’s wrong? Is it urgent?” Sun Shiqi asked.

“Oh, nothing.” Gu Shiyan nodded. “I understand, but you just saw someone who looks like her? You’re not sure?”

“That’s right. It’s been three or four years since I last saw her. Even if I did, I might not recognize her right away.”

“Okay, send me the address. I’ll check the surveillance footage. If she contacts you, let me know immediately.”

After saying this, Gu Shiyan took a sip of water. The bowl of ramen in front of him was untouched. “I’ll pay the bill. Take your time.”

“Hey.” She grabbed his sleeve. “So soon? You haven’t even started eating.”

Gu Shiyan looked down at her hand, took a step back. “I’m not eating.”

“What, are you afraid Luo Xing will misunderstand?”

He looked at her and nodded. “Yes.”

She was surprised. “Didn’t you two break up?”

Gu Shiyan didn’t deny it. He simply said, “I’m pursuing her.”

With that, he walked away.

“You’re pursuing her?” Sun Shiqi laughed as she stood. Her expression was scornful. “Does she even need you to pursue her? If she beckoned, you’d run to her. If you didn’t want to eat with me, you could at least come up with a better excuse.”

Gu Shiyan stopped, hands in his pockets, and turned around. “Why do you say that?”

He walked back and stood in front of her, exuding an inexplicable pressure.

“It’s not just me—everyone says so. If you beckon, Luo Xing will do anything for you. Isn’t that true?”

She scoffed as if recalling something. “I remember once, she saw me standing with you but didn’t even dare ask what our relationship was.”

She clapped her hands, laughing, head bowed. “She’s so pathetic. I don’t know how you ended up with her.”

“Pathetic?” Gu Shiyan’s eyes darkened.

The people sitting nearby hadn’t yet sensed the tension.

She shrugged. “Isn’t it true? She’s not worthy of you at all.”

“So you act close to me on purpose in front of her?” Gu Shiyan asked.

“It was just a joke. How was I to know she’d take it seriously? It’s kind of funny,” she sneered again.

But in the next moment, cold water poured over her carefully styled hair, and she couldn’t say another word.

Stunned, she looked up at Gu Shiyan, who was setting the empty glass back on the table.

The bottom of the glass hit the table with a sharp clink.

His expression was indifferent, not showing anger at all—unless you counted the fact that he’d just poured water on her.

Otherwise, she might have kept making jokes about Luo Xing.

“Why aren’t you talking?” His voice was calm, without a ripple.

Sun Shiqi lowered her head, water running down her hair and over her perfectly made-up face, her eyes red with humiliation.

“You’re pretty pathetic yourself, aren’t you?”

Gu Shiyan gestured and a waiter approached.

“Hello, is there anything I can help you with?” the waiter asked.

Gu Shiyan nodded. “Bring out everything on your menu, serve it to the other guests, and put it on her bill.”

The woman on the sofa wiped water from her face. “Gu Shiyan, I’m Wen Nuan’s friend. Are you really going to give up on Wen Nuan for Luo Xing?”

She gripped her designer bag tightly—the reward Gu Shiyan had given her for providing information.

“We don’t need to be in contact anymore. I’ll find her myself.”

With those words, Gu Shiyan left.

The waiter came over with the bill. “Miss, that comes to twenty-three thousand eight hundred. Will you be...?”

“Card!” she snapped, cutting him off.

The Wen family had fallen on hard times, and it was only through Wen Nuan that she’d been able to connect with Gu Shiyan. Over the years, she’d used his favor to buy luxury goods without a second thought.

She had thought, now that Luo Xing and he had broken up, that Luo Xing meant nothing to him, which was why she’d dared to speak as she had.

She hadn’t expected Gu Shiyan to douse her with water, right there in public, just to defend Luo Xing—and make her pay the bill too!

The stares from all around pressed in on her. Shame and grievance filled her eyes as she paid and left in tears.

...

Luo Xing left the lab building after eight. She carried her backpack; her laptop was still in the lab, so inside was only a tablet, not heavy.

Shen Que handed her a water bottle. “I’ll walk you home; it’s late.”

Luo Xing shook her head. “I’m renting closer than your dorm. And I need to buy something. Go on.”

Shen Que waved his phone. “Message me when you get back.”

Luo Xing nodded.

She glanced up. A few windows on the third floor of the lab building were still lit.

When she and Shen Que left, Gu Shiyan was still inside.

Luo Xing unscrewed her water bottle, drank the rest in big gulps, then tightened the lid slowly.

She kicked at the ground, trying to loosen her stiff muscles.

Her stomach was uncomfortable.

She crouched down to ease the pain.

She’d told Shen Que she needed to buy something—just sanitary pads.

Forcing herself to stand, she hooked her fingers through the water bottle’s strap and continued forward.

The lights on the third floor went out.

Gu Shiyan came out, carrying his bag, and saw Luo Xing not far ahead.

He paused, waited until she was farther away, then followed.

Rows of streetlights cast a bright glow on the path.

Luo Xing watched her own shadow as she walked out of the campus gate and into a store for some sanitary pads.

The plastic bag smacked softly against her knee as she walked.

This area was lively, filled with university students out late.

When her father helped her find a place to rent, he’d spent a long time choosing the location.

The road to her apartment was well-lit and bustling.

Even late at night, Luo Xing felt no fear.

Until a shadow stretched out beneath a streetlight and slowly approached her.

Luo Xing frowned. “Ke Yu...”
