Chapter Fifty-Five: The Falsehood Within the Truth
Arthur burst into laughter at Shadow Moon’s words, unable to straighten his back, tears streaming from his eyes. The joy that had just been about to surge from his heart was instantly doused, leaving a cold chill within him. Beneath his laughter, endless sorrow was concealed.
Shadow Moon frowned slightly as she watched Arthur’s sudden, almost manic laughter.
“You remember now. At last, you remember.”
“That’s right. I remember,” Arthur said, his laughter vanishing abruptly. He looked at Shadow Moon with a hint of mockery. “Yes, you remember,” he repeated, his tone clouded with emotion.
Yes, you remember. But what you recall are always the things best left forgotten.
Arthur gazed at the calm yet disdainful look in Shadow Moon’s eyes, then leaned in until their noses almost touched, staring directly into her eyes. “Perhaps this is for the best. Now that you know what kind of person I am, I imagine you understand very well what you must do next.” Without waiting for a reply, Arthur straightened up and walked to the window. His cold voice floated back, “I hear Yu Wenxi is still in Rome. Perhaps we should invite him here as a guest.” As he turned around, he was satisfied to see the anger flare in Shadow Moon’s once-calm eyes, the corners of his mouth curving upward.
“You’re despicable,” Shadow Moon said, suppressing her fury when faced with Arthur’s hateful smile. Her voice was once again flat and emotionless. She closed her eyes, refusing to look at him any longer.
As soon as Shadow Moon shut her eyes, Arthur’s brilliant smile faded. He stood by the window in silence, bathed in sunlight, gazing at her in a daze.
Is this all that remains between us? Must your memories of me always be so loathsome? Even now that your memory has returned, does it only deepen your hatred for me?
Arthur stood there for an unmeasured span of time before heading toward the door. As his hand touched the handle, he suddenly spoke, “Come to my bedroom tonight.” Then, without another word, he opened the door and left, not looking back.
Upon hearing Arthur’s words, Forever opened her eyes wide, staring in the direction he had gone. A smile devoid of joy flickered at her lips, and her eyes were cold as ice.
Arthur leaned wearily against the closed door, shutting his bright eyes. If this is how I live in your memory, then so be it.
Even if it’s hatred, I want to be a mark in the depths of your heart that can never be erased.
That night, lights blazed throughout Lilith Castle, casting a unique atmosphere over the evening.
Shadow Moon sat before the dressing table, while the maid behind her quietly arranged her hair. Gazing at her still-pale cheeks in the mirror, Shadow Moon’s lips curled in a mocking smile.
“You may go now,” Shadow Moon said quietly to the maid.
“But—” the maid hesitated, “His Highness instructed me to take good care of you, miss.”
“I’ll speak to him myself. You may leave.”
The maid looked at Shadow Moon in distress, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. She stood there, body trembling slightly.
Seeing the maid’s reluctance, Shadow Moon’s face darkened and her words came out cold as ice, “Leave.”
The maid flinched at the sound, cast a fearful glance at Shadow Moon, bowed respectfully, and slowly retreated toward the door.
Shadow Moon rose and walked to the bed. On the wide purple princess bed lay a pale lavender dress—more precisely, a semi-transparent lace nightgown. Bending down to pick it up, she felt the soft fabric beneath her fingers, yet the touch only made her heart grow colder. Without a word, she carried the gown into the bathroom.
Meanwhile, Arthur, dressed in a pale blue silk robe, reclined half on the bed. The smooth fabric clung to him, his toned chest half-exposed, long legs crossed and bare to the air. At this moment, this sensual man was absorbed in the data on his computer screen, until a knock sounded at the door.
“Your Highness—” came the butler’s voice from outside.
Arthur’s fingers danced across the keyboard. “Come in.”
The crisp sound of the door closing echoed through the spacious room. Finally, Arthur lifted his head from the screen.
“You…”
