Volume One, Chapter 111: The Amulet Has Arrived
Mu Ling looked at the thing that had crawled out of the pit, then at Qin Yu, and her jaw nearly hit the floor.
“Xiao Yu, tell me I’m seeing things. Did you summon a little radish?”
No sooner had the words left her mouth than a sharp whack landed on Mu Ling’s head.
“You brat! Watch your words! Call me Lord Clerk!”
Mu Ling saw stars from the blow, but still retorted, “Bah! You freakish little radish!”
The little radish sprang into furious pursuit, and Mu Ling turned and ran for her life.
Thus a comical scene unfolded: the radish sprite chasing after Mu Ling, with five ghosts trailing behind her.
Qin Yu watched the chaos before her, her eyelids twitching.
A flash of sword energy slammed down between the radish sprite and Mu Ling.
The two creatures froze on the spot.
“How dare you! Do you know who I am? You dare lay a hand on me!”
Unable to move, the little radish still wouldn’t stop talking.
Qin Yu shot it a sidelong glare, and the tiny radish immediately fell silent.
“I’ve heard that Lord Xie Seven has taken a liking to growing radishes lately, and that radish culture is all the rage in the Underworld. I assume you’re some ghost officer’s pet?”
The little radish stared at Qin Yu in alarm and warily asked, “Who are you?”
“Who I am isn’t important. If the higher-ups find out that the ghost officer on duty tonight abandoned his post and let his pet radish fill in for him, what do you think will happen?”
Qin Yu spoke at an unhurried pace.
Although the little radish had seen plenty while following a ghost officer, it was, after all, only a pet. It knew how to strut behind borrowed authority, but when real trouble came, how could it possibly handle it?
A few words from Qin Yu left it thoroughly dazed.
“There are many ghost officers on duty tonight. Losing just one master won’t matter. Please, Your Excellency, show mercy and don’t report my master.”
Qin Yu nodded in understanding.
“Easy enough. I do have a few wronged spirits here that need escorting…”
She did not even need to finish speaking before the little radish nodded repeatedly.
“Don’t worry, My Lady! I can lead the way! Leave it to me!”
Qin Yu gave Mu Ling a look. Though suspicious, Mu Ling handed over the five ghosts.
“Today’s matter, I hope Your Excellency will keep strictly confidential.”
Before leaving, the radish sprite even offered a polite reminder.
Qin Yu smiled and agreed, watching as the little radish led the ghosts through the ghost gate.
“Xiao Yu, can it really be trusted?”
Mu Ling still thought it sounded unreliable.
Qin Yu merely smiled and said nothing.
In her heart, she gave a soft sneer.
---
Jingfang Mountain Castle.
“Ah!”
At daybreak, a bizarre cry rang out over the castle.
“Young Master, what happened?”
The butler and servants rushed upstairs at once, only to find Lu Hualing rummaging frantically through the guest room.
“It’s gone! Everything’s gone! I only closed my eyes for a second!”
The servant looked puzzled. “Young Master, what’s gone?”
“His luggage! All the master’s personal belongings! They vanished in one go!”
He had thought that if Qin Yu were leaving, she would surely come back to collect her things, so he had been waiting all night for her to take the bait. He had never imagined that he would still miss his chance.
The butler let out a breath of relief. He had thought something serious had happened.
The more Lu Hualing thought about it, the more regretful he became.
No, he had to go and explain everything to the master.
Just as he was about to get up, the butler saw through his intention and stopped him.
“Young Master, the old master has instructed that from now on, you are to remain at home.”
---
On Spirit Mountain, the Master had set up gathering-spirit talismans, which were greatly beneficial to Qin Yu’s cultivation.
In just three days, her body had largely recovered.
“Xiao Yu, I think we’re surrounded!”
Mu Ling was still holding a muddy radish freshly pulled from the ground.
Qin Yu did not even open her eyes, as if she had expected this all along.
“Don’t we need to run?”
Qin Yu smiled mysteriously. “Run? Why run? Our lucky charm has arrived!”
Though Mu Ling did not understand what she meant, a surge of confidence swelled in her anyway.
He thought to himself that he was probably what people online now called a painfully overconfident man.
Knock, knock, knock.
Someone rapped on the door outside the temple.
Qin Yu opened her eyes, smiled faintly, and stood up.
Today, Qin Yu wore a gray-green Taoist robe. Her waist-length hair was loosely pinned up with a wooden hairpin, making her look as fresh and unworldly as a lotus in bloom.
Before the door was even opened, Mu Ling could already feel the mighty, upright energy gathering outside.
Qin Yu opened the door, revealing a neat little formation of ten people arranged in two rows.
When Qin Yu appeared, the formation shifted with military precision, each person stepping a half pace aside. Only then did the elderly man at the back of the line come into view.
“Qin Yu, I have long heard of your name.”
