A flicker passed through Duck Egg's eyes, but fortunately Qin Yu changed the subject.
"They're cultivating ghosts?"
Duck Egg nodded. "Yes!"
Mu Ling was confused and looked to Qin Yu for an explanation. "Cultivating what ghost?"
"The resentment on children is the heaviest and most direct. Their worldview hasn't been shaped yet—they don't reason when they hate. Buddha is exploiting exactly that to create resentment ghosts."
The method of creating resentment ghosts was extremely cruel, which was why those who made them rarely met a good end.
What could possibly be worth this so-called Buddha defying the laws of heaven to do such a thing?
Duck Egg watched Qin Yu and gave a slight nod, which gave Qin Yu the illusion that there wasn't a child beneath that shell.
"So the yang energy in the village has all been absorbed by these resentment ghosts?"
The question that had been troubling Qin Yu finally had its answer.
Duck Egg lowered her head. "Yes."
"Then what did you mean by 'the thing that harms people'?" Qin Yu pressed on.
Duck Egg looked at the moon outside, somewhat anxious. "Three days from now is the believers' assembly. When you see it with your own eyes, you'll know what I mean."
She must have caught sight of something, because after saying this, she ran outside.
Mu Ling was left behind, cursing under his breath. "Wait, why don't you just tell us outright?"
"Xiao Yu, do you want me to catch her again?"
Qin Yu let out a soft laugh. "No need."
Mu Ling squinted and frowned at Qin Yu. "I keep feeling like you're hiding something from me."

"You're overthinking it." Qin Yu even tapped Mu Ling on the forehead with her finger. "With all this idle time you're spending wondering what I'm thinking, why not figure out how to get some food instead?"
"Didn't I just find those cornbread buns?"
Qin Yu pointed at the door. "That was the last one just now. Besides, I don't want to eat cornbread anymore..."
Mu Ling: ...
"Xiao Yu, I'm a ghost."
"So?"
"I'm a fierce ghost."
"So?"
"Can you assign me something impressive to do? All I ever get is catching minor spirits or hunting things down. I feel like I'm being wasted on trifles." Mu Ling sounded aggrieved.
Qin Yu patted his head. "Once we get out of here, I'll give you something big to do. How about that?"
Mu Ling looked at her doubtfully. "Really?"
"Really!" Qin Yu nodded earnestly.
At that moment, the bullet comments rolled in.
「Hahaha, so even the master knows how to dangle a carrot!」
「Mu Ling falling for it looks exactly like my boss dangling a carrot in front of me」
「Guys, have I been single too long? Even a ghost whose face I can't make out is starting to look handsome to me?」
「But Mu Ling is seriously adorable though!」
——
Qiao Sheng thought that if he starved Qin Yu for a couple of days, she'd obediently come crawling with money.

But by the day she was about to meet the Buddha, not only had she not begged for mercy, she actually looked even more rosy-cheeked than before?
Qiao Sheng couldn't make sense of it. "Miss, are you really not hungry?"
Qin Yu lied through her teeth without so much as a change in expression. "Fasting is good for the body."
Qiao Sheng: ...
For the past few days, Qin Yu had stayed around the village entrance. Today, with Qiao Sheng leading the way, she finally got the chance to get closer to the village itself.
Mu Ling floated overhead, watching Qiao Sheng trigger traps planted all over the ground, and was stunned speechless.
No wonder Xiao Yu hadn't made a move these past two days. With this many traps, anyone who came in would be skinned alive.
The village was even more desolate than the entrance. The streets that should have been bustling were completely empty, and everywhere lay people dressed in ragged beggar's clothes.
When they saw Qiao Sheng bringing an outsider in, their eyes lit up with an eerie glint.
"Brother Qiao Sheng, pick me to receive the blessing this time! I'm aching all over from the torment! If I don't get the goddess's holy light soon, I'll die!"
The man had nothing on him but a single triangular scrap of cloth around his waist. He clutched Qiao Sheng's leg tightly, as if it were his last lifeline.
Qiao Sheng was long accustomed to this. He gathered his strength and kicked the man flying. "You haven't even paid, and you want the holy light? Someone like you would be better off dead! Leave the holy light for those who deserve it!"
That kick of Qiao Sheng's was vicious. The body hit the ground and never got up again.
His actions successfully deterred the others who had been about to come forward.
Probably figuring that Qin Yu was already in the village and couldn't escape, Qiao Sheng dropped his mask.
He pointed at the corpse lying motionless on the ground with a hideous expression. "Miss, if you don't want to end up like him..."
